Bergen in a Day

Bergen in a Day

So you’re planning a short trip to Bergen, and aren’t sure where to start?

We’ve got you covered! This list can be accomplished within a single day spent in Bergen, affording travelers on a tight clock plenty of views, culture, and experiences. Keep reading to discover four must-sees in Norway’s picturesque port city.

1 - Bryggen

You’ve likely seen photos of Bergen’s famous historic harbor, and may already have this destination on your list. If not, it’s definitely worth a visit. On sunny days, enjoy a beverage with a view of the water, or take a stroll down the wharf to soak in the magic of the cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and quaint atmosphere.

There’s plenty of shopping to do when the inevitable rain shower creeps over the city. Whether you’re looking for souvenirs, art, or other mementos, Bryggen has no shortage of storefronts. Truly the center of life in the city, you can’t go Bergen without going to Bryggen. It’s like going to Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower!

2 - Fløibanen to Mount Fløyen

Located in the heart of Bergen and within walking distance from Bryggen, Fløibanen will take you on a short train ride to a spectacular view of the city and the fjords beyond. Don’t forget to say hello to the docile cashmere goats at the top before either taking the train back down, or walking a scenic 45 minutes through the forest and charming residential neighborhood. Many local Norwegians even use this path for daily exercise!

3 - Ulriksbanen

This cable car will bring you to the top of Mount Ulriken, offering another breathtaking view of Bergen and Norway’s natural scenery. Don’t be fooled by promises of a leisurely downhill promenade, Ulriken’s 1333 rocky steps can be taxing -- especially if you decide to climb up them! However, the view is worth the climb. Avid hikers can even take the 5-hour trek between Ulriken and Fløyen.

But don’t worry, if you’re not into hiking, you can also take the gondola back down. Whichever route you choose, the views will not disappoint, and you’ll leave with a stronger essence of Norway.

4 - The Fish Market

A break in sightseeing will lead you to Bergen’s Fish Market, conveniently located at the end of the harbor. Red tents enclose a vast array of fresh seafood and draw in both hungry tourists and those who simply want to stroll through. Even if seafood is not your meal of choice, the Fish Market is still worth a walk-through, if only to witness the sale of authentic whale meat to curious travelers.
